First Time Skiing – What Ski Apparel is Needed?

FILED IN Ski Boarding No Comments

So you are going to take to the ski slopes for the first time but the whole idea is just rather daunting. Never fear, here are a few tips to get you up and running or should we say skiing. Try to get some time in the gym before going skiing, most often people go on vacations to go skiing and you don’t want to get to the slopes, ski for half a day and then not be able to work for the rest of your stay. Get to your local gym and ask the instructors what exercising you can do to be more fit and ready to hit the slopes. Lots of squats and much inner body core muscle exercise I would imagine. Then, some people say that you should do some sort of sport that is close to snow skiing to get you used to the movement when skiing. I would think if you come from the warmer climates, you could try water wake boarding – being towed behind a boat – although that is going to prepare you for snowboarding more than skiing. Not sure what else you could try. Watch a ski instruction video, most ski apparel shops should have a video or two in stock which will give you good tips on how to ski; snowcat skiing. You are going to need ski apparel, or we could say skiing clothing and protective gear; heli ski. The tip here is not to go for the best brand, but go for a brand that is average and which has a good name – normally the older styles will have stood the test of time. The important ski apparel item is the ski jacket, this is critical in either making or breaking a ski trip. Too light and you will be cold, too thick and you will not be able to move – if it does not breath properly, you will sweat and then your sweat will get cold and so will you. Also be sure that your jacket has enough packets, like the ski pass – often jackets have special pockets for ski passes and also keys and cellular phones. The other item of ski apparel that is important are the pants, not as critical as the jacket, but it will also spoil your day if you are wet or cold; cat skiing. The other bit of ski apparel that is important are the layers/undergarments – things like long johns, like a t-shirt underneath or body suits, but the idea is that you can keep yourself warm even by just wearing the number of layers to protect you – just be careful of overdoing the number of layers as it affects your movement while skiing. On the equipment side and especially for the first time I recommend that you hire your equipment – that way you are not stuck with them if you don’t enjoy skiing, take a good couple of thick socks to use with the ski boots – and a couple of big band aid plasters to put over the blisters! To fully enjoy the skiing, make sure you are fit, warm and flexible – just that can make all the difference to your skiing holiday.

Julia Mancuso Two Time 2010 Vancouver Olympic Silver Medalist At Northstar Ski Resort In Lake Tahoe

FILED IN Ski Boarding No Comments

Congratulations to Julia Mancuso on her two silver medals in the Olympic Games!!!
Julia Mancuso came home to a fantastic “Welcome Home” shindig at Northstar Ski Resort in Lake Tahoe. The festivities honoring Julia Mancuso, the Two Time Silver Medalist in the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games, kicked off on Sunday February 27, 2010 and never slowed down throughout the day. Northstar was the funkiest trip we’ve taken this season and definitely the best time we’ve enjoyed this year and the after-hours festivities kept going into the evening hours for non-stop enjoyment. Northstar supplied all the merriment with live music, outstanding food, spirits, entertainment for the whole family and a wonderful awards show, there was never a dull moment at Northstar’s Olympic toast to Julia Mancuso.

I’ve got to give credit where credit is due and Northstar put on one heck of a great time for Julia Mancuso and her fans of all ages. Live bands (Jo Mama & Colorshow) played all day in the Village Stage at Northstar for anxious Mancuso fans waiting for their opportunity to congratulate the Ladies’ Downhill and Super Combined Silver medalist. Just watching Julia rock out with “Colorshow” was pretty dang cool (in a sexy sort of way) and feeling the energy of her numerous fans sway to the music was epic. The live music wasn’t all that Northstar supplied, the Apex Bungy Trampoline and Ice Skating Rink in the center of the Village at Northstar was additional fun for the whole family. Simply put, there was more than enough fun and entertainment throughout the day at Northstar Ski Resort during the Julia Mancuso Welcome Home Festival.

Northstar really did a wonderful job of opening up their hearts to Julia and her many fans and from the moment we arrived at the Julia Mancuso Festival up to the moment we left we had the time of our lives, being able to see Olympic Medalist Mancuso and having the good fortune of Northstar’s plush entertainment was more than we could have ever hoped for. They really rolled out the red carpet for everyone, even for canine companions. Yes, Northstar is definitely a “Dog-Friendly” world class resort. And it was pretty dang sweet having my 11 year old Border Collie “Cody” getting to meet Lake Tahoe Hero Julia Mancuso (Cody is currently trading in his Frisbee for some new K2s).

The awards ceremony was highlighted by watching Lake Tahoe local hero and two time silver medalist Julia Mancuso proudly hoist her Olympic medals into the warm Tahoe air, it was enough to take your breath away, and an experience I will not soon forget. So, the festival has come and gone, but come on out and explore awesome slopes right now at Northstar. The snow pack is terrific and we’re currently expecting more snowfall this weekend. Enjoy Northstar’s Terrain Parks and Cross Country, Telemark skiing as well as Boarding the Pipes and Downhill skiing. Oh, and the Kid’s Adventure Parks will keep ‘em busy having fun all day long. Thank you again Northstar and thank you Julia Mancuso for your hard work and world class athleticism in bringing home Two Silver Medals!!!

Top Winter Time Auto Products – Wiper Blades and Ski Racks

FILED IN Ski Boarding No Comments

The auto market research that I conducted for this article was based on finding the top 2 products that most drivers could make use of. I wanted to select one every-day product that almost every driver could use, and another lifestyle oriented product. One that personalizes a vehicle and also makes the driving experience more comfortable.

Something As Simple As New Wiper Blades?

For my first product, I wanted to find something that would offer a solution to the harsh elements that the winter throws at us. Whether you live on the East, West, South Coast…. Or reside in Fargo North Dakota, every vehicle has a set of wiper blades that endure a heavy workload when it rains or snows. This is a product that many overlook and rarely look to improve.

New wiper blades can enable for much clearer vision of the road. As if the slick roads weren’t dangerous enough, vision is impaired during bad road conditions. A new set of wiper blades helps keep your windshield free of dirt, water, and snow streaks when clear vision is most important. New blades are easy to find in local part store and on online for discount prices that are likely better than local part stores. Go with a top name brand, you’ll be surprised to see the difference in effectiveness from cheap blades to high quality blades. For such a cheap part that is so influential on your ability to drive during harsh road conditions, I would recommend going with quality here. PIAA, Rain X, Trico & Bosch are trusted brand names.

What’s All The Rack-it?

For my second recommended product, I did research to see what the most popular activity was during the winter. Yes, beer drinking came up in my online searches ? but I wanted to find what the top activity was that directly related to vehicle products needed for the activity/lifestyle. It may sound obvious to you, but I was surprised to hear that skiing was the top activity. Maybe it’s because I live in Southern California, but I was really surprised. When I think about skiing, I picture that classic 80’s movie “Ski School” and all of the funny things that they did to win the competition at the end of the movie. So the perfect auto product to fit this activity would have to be ski racks. Most people don’t ski by themselves; they go with family and friends. So anywhere from 6 to 12 skis are needed for the trip and that takes up a lot of cabin space. Not to mention the wet dripping snow they track after the long-days’ session.

The solution; throw a rack on the roof and strap those skis down! Many fit both skis and snowboards. Same idea applies here as for wiper blades. Go with a trusted name brand. You don’t want to see those expensive skis flying off the roof, and you certainly don’t want the skis falling out of the racks and dinging your precious ride. Thule and Yakima make trusted products, and many newer sport oriented vehicles come with their racks straight from the manufacturer.

I once purchased cheap soft-surf racks and regretted it. On the way to the beach, one clamp broke and my board slipped and hit my trunk on the way out, leaving a dent on my trunk and a busted Channel Islands surfboard on the road.

First Time Snow Boarding

FILED IN Snow Boarding No Comments

This was my first attempt at going snowboarding and I figured I would record it and share my experience. I went yesterday and I'm really sore today, pretty much every muscle in my body is in some sort of pain, he he. Either way this video was shot with my new Kodak Zi8 at 720p at 60 frames per second. Although when I exported it using "youtube Widescreen 720p" preset in Adobe Premier it rendered it at 24 frames per second so it doesn't look as smooth as the original footage.
