BC Cat Skiing Benefits

FILED IN Ski Boarding No Comments

For winter sports fans looking to spice up their backcountry skiing experience in the picturesque region of British Columbia, a sound idea would be to opt for a quality snowcat skiing operator and get a taste of Canada’s finest selection of untamed ski circuits. BC cat skiing operators can accommodate to groups of either skiers or snowboarders, taking them to virgin mountain territories that ensure both a skiing and snowboarding challenge and an invigorating adventure in the heart of nature. Compared to heli skiing, snowcat boarding and skiing have the major advantage of being sensibly more affordable, with an average price of about $500 a day for an all-inclusive package of services per guest. Another benefit that BC cat skiing and boarding have over their airborne ride alternative consists in reduced downtimes due to impracticable meteorological conditions. While snowcats are indeed the slower and less exciting way of reaching your destination, they fully compensate in terms of reliability, comfort, and not to mention safety. Additionally, thanks to the extra storage space and less restrictive weight considerations, these lumbering machines enable groups of skiers to pack more equipment. BC cat skiing services have the reputation of being highly dedicated to the client, with some operators even striving to customize each trip according to groups’ powder skiing experience levels, fitness condition, as well as skiing and snowboarding preferences. Apart from taking you to amazing skiing slopes that would make any winter sports fanatic jealous, the seasoned cat skiing guides will also cater to your safety, comfort, fun and excitement, helping you get the most out of your powder catskiing adventure. Although BC cat skiing is generally limited to less wider areas as opposed to heli skiing, with a good selection of quality ski circuits that matches your level of powder skiing experience, there’s no chance you’ll ever become bored out there. All it takes to ensure a memorable snowcat boarding or cat skiing experience in a breathtaking and wild mountain landscape is to choose the right company and plan your trip wisely, taking into account things like accessibility and quality of skiing areas, weather conditions, lodging options, overall duration of the stay, and finally yet importantly, the total underlying costs. With proper planning and the help of a competitive BC cat skiing company, chances are you will be in for the powder skiing experience of a lifetime!

The Exhilaration of Skiing the Slopes

FILED IN Ski Boarding No Comments

You’ve been there. You know you need more exercise and you are going to do it this time. You will have no more failed attempts to get yourself in shape. But you still must choose the form of exercise to do. You think to yourself that it would be nice to have a program that can be done inside or outside and year-round. Besides that, you would like a program that does not wear you out but will still work all muscles the in your body.

But wait! This sounds just like skiing! Not only that, there are also many types of skiing. You’ve seen it: folks riding a chairlift, hopping off, turning and gliding downhill. They’re all bundled up in their ski outfits. Some crash and tumble one or more times before they reach the bottom. Their skis are raised cockeyed and their face is blasted by a freezing wind.

The downhill skier is the one that mostly comes to mind when someone mentions skiing. The most popular places we hear of where the world travelers and famous people ski are The Alps, Aspen, Telluride and others.

We all are excited that skiing has become a wide open sport that many folks can enjoy all year and benefit from it physically too. It is a beautiful sport to keep your heart healthy.

These ski areas usually have chairlifts that lift you to the top to descend down extreme and not too extreme slopes. Snow can either be actual or man-made. No need to worry about getting cold as you will get warm as your activity increases.

The sport is rather easy once you get used to it. However day one is no walk in the park. Do not be surprised if you tumble quite often. It would be wise to take ski lessons and do not be surprised if you find downhill skiing to be rather expensive. When estimating the cost of a ski trip, one must consider the price of lift tickets, costs for ski site trips, renting or buying the skis, and the ski clothing costs along with sunglasses. However you probably won’t mind the cost once you experience the thrills and fun of skiing – all after you learn to ski of course.

Maybe you would prefer cross-country skiing. This is much more strenuous then with downhill skiing. You have no assistance outside of your own in this type of skiing. You cannot get uphill by a chairlift because there are none. However you probably will not tumble down mountains as steep as with downhill skiing. The cost is much lower compared to downhill skiing. You can obtain trail passes and rent the skis at much lower prices. More than likely you will not need any lessons and if you do they will not cost as much as downhill skiing lessons either.

A type of cross-country skiing that needs a different sort of skis is known as “skate.” While skis make this type of skiing much easier, you can also “skate” with traditional skates. You gain speed by doing the same actual movements as those of ice skating. The learning curve is not too steep however you must realize that it is tougher than with traditional cross-country skiing and much more physically challenging. You also need trails broader than with cross-country in order to really enjoy this type of skiing.

Then for those who like thrills, there is a type of skiing in which you can fly into the air from jump slopes prepared exactly for doing just that. Your endurance and flexibility will be tested on this one. This type of skiing will definitely put a pinch on your finances just as will alpine skiing. Alpine skiing is a type of skiing that allows much faster runs with fewer twisted courses.

Snowboarding is known by the skier having one wide ski without poles and it reminds us of surfing. There is also a type known as ski boarding which has skis used without poles that are shorter and broader. The ski boarder experiences some of the same thrills as with in-line roller skating or ice skating. It is much easer to pick up this type of skiing than the traditional types because of a ski board’s maneuverability.

It is apparant that there is a type of skiing for everyone to enjoy. If you do not like to be in the cold then cross-country skiing is probably for you. If you like leaping into the air and hitting the slope with great impact and speed then ski jumping is probably for you. But be smart about it: invest in some lessons.

Fun in the Snow with Skiing

FILED IN Ski Boarding No Comments

You’ve made up your mind. You’ve resolved (maybe again) to get more exercise. All that’s left is deciding what to choose. What if you wanted something you can do either indoors or outdoors, in any season, at nearly any time, and provides an all-over “workout” without feeling like you’ve done any work?

Think a minute: This easily describes several of the different types of the surprisingly varied world of snow skiing. The image most people think of is standard: You get on a chairlift, drop off easily, and ski down the slopes. You’re wearing heavy, cold-weather gear and usually topple over once or twice on the way down, skis askew in the air, the biting chill of the wind hitting your face.

Thankfully, the world of snow skiing has broadened widely and has become a year-round enjoyment for millions — while also providing an excellent source of cardiovascular exercise.

Downhill, or classical, skiing, is the picture-postcard most of us think of when we hear the word “skiing.” It usually involves places like The Alps, Aspen, Telluride, or just about anywhere most jet-setters and celebrities frequent.

This is the one that involves a chairlift, and skiing down often-steep slopes. There is either real snow or manufactured snow, and you will get cold, but you’ll warm up once you get going.

The sport is not too difficult once you get the hang of it, but it definitely will not be easy the first day you try. Actually, you can expect to fall down many times. Lessons are usually a good idea, and this type is skiing is going to be expensive. Lift ticket prices, travel to and from ski sites, ski rentals or purchase, and appro-priate wear, including sunglasses, are going to cost you more financially, but the results can be exhilarating and quite fun — again, once you catch on.

Next, there’s cross-country skiing. Admittedly, this is going to be physically challenging to most people. Here’s where you do all the work yourself. There are no chairlifts to bring you up the hills, and you must ski up on your own. But, on the flip side, you won’t careen down mountains near as steep as the ones in downhill skiing, and it’s much more affordable than downhill ski-ing. Trail passes and ski rentals are relatively inex-pensive, and you probably can teach yourself — hence, no lessons!

“Skate” cross-country skiing is another form of cross-country skiing that requires slightly different skis. You can actually “skate” with regular, classical skates, but skis do make it easier. You can pick up speed by simu-lating the physical motions of ice skating. It’s not too difficult to pick up skate cross-country, but it is harder than classical cross country skiing, and requires more physical endurance. It is also helpful to have clear and wider trails for this to be truly enjoyable.

If you’re really the adventurous type, the ski jump, in which you leap from specially prepared jump slopes, will definitely test your stamina and maneuverability. Note that this will also test your checkbook balance, as well as alpine skiing, which has fewer twisted courses that permit much faster speeds, but again, it will have a more pronounced affect on your bank balance than the other types of snow skiing.

Snowboarding involves a single wide ski, or snowboard, no poles, and is similar to surfing. Ski experts have also now come up with ski boarding, which employs shorter and wider skis that are generally used without poles. Ski boarding also offers the skier some of the sensa-tions of ice skating or in-line roller skating. It is usually easier to learn than classical skiing, largely because ski boards are simply more “handle-friendly.”

With the comprehensive, attractive array of skiing methods out there today, there’s something in it for everyone. Can’t stand the cold? Try cross-country. Love the idea of bounding from a slope onto hard, impacted snow and hitting the ground hard and fast? Simple. Take up ski jumping. But please — take lessons first!

Skiing – Some Of The World’s Best Ski Spots

FILED IN Ski Boarding No Comments

Many of us have had holidays spent breathing recycled air in “luxury” coaches, watching bad television in hotel rooms, eating beyond our capacity simply because meals were included in the “package” and there was little else to do. Yawn! But not if there’s snow on the ground; don the long johns and get at it . 1. Austria: skiing for amateurs – So maybe you’re not the athletic type. You don’t have to be to take advantage of the world’s best sporting havens, particularly if you take a few professional lessons. St. Anton, in the Arlberg region of Austria, is the best place to go for ski instruction-the Arlberg School ski technique originated here and the area’s 300+ instructors are all well-versed in the method. In the hands of these pros, you’ll look like an expert after a few days on the slopes. 2. Chile’s best skiing for mamas’ boys (sorry.we mean “cautious athletic types”) – If you’ve got nothing to prove and just want some sane, safe skiing, La Parva, located just minutes from Santiago, allows you to ski heli ski from your lodge to the lifts. If you’re afraid of getting hurled into a tree, there’s no need to worry here: the mountains are treeless. The slopes also have wind-curled cornices, so snowboarders can afford to try out a few new stunts. This is also a perfect spot to try heli-skiing in a friendly, nurturing environment. 3. Ski Whistler Blackcomb before the next Olympians do! When it comes to skiing and riding, Whistler Blackcomb with its 8,000 plus acres of terrain on both mountains, has variety and then some. Choose from steeps, deeps, chutes, high alpine bowls, glades, superb corduroy, long cruisers and gentle rollers. Riders and skiers will revel in the Parks and Pipes on both mountains plus natural launch pads, hits, wind-lips, cornices, cliff drops and ridges – the place is like a huge, natural terrain park! And the night-life is great too! This is the site of the next Winter Olympics. 4. World-class cat skiing for coupon clippers…in the Italian Alps – Sure, you’d love to go on a ritzy ski holiday but you’re – well, how can we put this? …broke. No worries. We appreciate a good bargain ourselves and have found that the deals in life are often a mere stone’s throw away from the pricey stuff. Such is the case in the Italian Alps: Mount Livata and Pescasseroli are located very near Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy’s most popular resort, but offer affordable accommodation and similar access to facilities. Same goes for Val d’Ayas, which is located near pricey Courmayeur and Cervinia and offers lower lift prices, more challenging runs and fewer crowds. 5. And if that’s not cheap enough, there’s skiing in Spain – You can ski in Spain on a busker’s budget. While there is a certain aura about the Alps resorts in France, Austria, Italy and Switzerland, the Spanish Pyrenees area keeps up with the best of them (and certainly surpasses them with respect to value.) Baquiera-Beret, in Lerida, boasts a lengthy ski season (November through April), numerous slopes of varying difficulty, plenty of chair lifts, professional ski instruction and – this is the best part – far fewer crowds than the pricier resorts. A good place to stay is Hotel Montarto which offers spectacular views and easy access to lifts. 6. If you think you’re a good skiier, try heli-skiing in the Purcells in British Columbia – Rk Heliski in Golden, welcomes you to 1,500 square kilometres/ 930 sq. miles of incredible terrain in the spectacular Purcell Mountains, on the edge of the legendary Bugaboos. Snowcat skiing/boarding tours are led by some of the world’s best mountain guides to access wide open alpine slopes, scenic glaciers and gladed forests dusted with annual snowfalls of up to 1,100 cm/36 feet. Some of this is extreme skiing, definitely not for the novice, but hey, who wants to live forever? 7. Austria’s least-known sport that’ll make you feel like a kid again – Austria’s Lake District boasts excellent ice-skating and skiing during the winter as well as water sports during the summer. The area around Wolfgangsee offers a little-known sport that’ll take you right back to your childhood. Mountain tobogganing involves carting a metal saucer-of-a-thing up a hillside (we recommend the chair lift as opposed to a hike) and descending on a metal track to the bottom. It’ll be the most invigorating five minutes of your life. Next step? Do it again! 8. And after lots of lessons and a stiff drink…Canadian daredevil’s dream – Canada’s ski-jump champs practice in Thunder Bay, Ontario, regarded as the world’s biggest jump. You’ve seen the Bond films – now it’s your turn. Mind you, there are also cross-country trails for beginners if you need to get up your confidence. The area includes four major Alpine areas. Daily flight service can be arranged from Toronto, Winnipeg and Minneapolis. This place can be crowded during peak season–who knew there were so many daredevils around?

Skiing this winter in picturesque region of Zell am See!

FILED IN Ski Boarding No Comments

One of the top destinations this winter to go skiing has to be Zell am See. A town resort located in the state of Salzburg, in the western region of Austria, and nested in the Alps.

Indeed the city is right at the foot of the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, and in the proximity Schmittenhöhe, and Maiskogel, which are covered in snow all year round, and that is because this glacier stand over 3000 meters above sea level. This scenery represents thus the perfect place to get your skis and boards out and tackle the slopes this winter as well as this summer.

On the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, you’ll be able to take advantage of 138 kilometres of pistes, of which 22 are considered to be blue or green, in terms of difficulty, 16 are red and the remaining three are black and designed to satisfy the more savvy skiers and boarders, for who skiing has become like second nature. If you are one of those experts, you’ll be able to enjoy an extra 25 kilometres of black pistes on the Schmittenhöhe, as well as 5 free ride routes, of which three are new. To take you to the pistes, you’ll be taking the highest cable car in the world, suspended at a height of about 114m. You are now in possession of the main ingredients for the perfect skiing holiday. All that is left to do now  is to get there and experience this little haven of peace and natural beauty.

The opening winter season really starts in earnest in October and carries on until mid April. But because of Zell am See’s position at the foot of a glacier, it becomes hard to talk about skiing season, since the latter is constantly covered in snow thus offering the possibility to engage in the practice of some winter sports even in the very hot summer months. For when you are down in the valley and by the Zeller See lake, the weather is that of the continental type, meaning that during the months of July and August, the temperature can go quite high, above 30 Celsius,

Isn’t it amazing to be able to ski whenever you want?  And you won’t find any other place in Austria that will offer you that same luxury. It is therefore vital that you book your holiday and hotels in advance, to ensure that you will be on the slopes this summer or winter, for I predict some very busy seasons ahead in Zell am See. And the perfect place to do so would be http://www.mountvacation.com/en/austria/zell-am-see-kaprun/.

The Greatest 4 Journey Days Of Skiing

FILED IN Ski Boarding No Comments

Seize your skis and get out right here!

These seven words have been the start of probably the most epic journey of my life. They came in the form of a telephone name from a distant lodge in Japanese British Columbia.

“Man you will not consider what the final 2 days had been like. It hasn’t stopped snowing here for 42 hours. Dude it is nearly waist deep. We signed up for an additional 4 days. There is one spot left. Seize your skis and get out here.

“I’m in” I swiftly declared not fairly certain how I was going to get away from work.

When it is waist deep I can at all times discover a cause for getting out of work. I used to be buzzing. It has been a very lengthy time since I’ve gone snowboarding in the again country. I rapidly threw a couple changes of clothes into my pack, gloves, helmet, goggles, in also. Transferred some cash round and I was on my strategy to the journey of a lifetime, literally.

I used to be going to Golden BC to take pleasure in some nice snowcat skiing about eighty north of the small mountain community. Some guys I knew from Calgary were up on a 3 day tour at Chatter Creek and known as me after their second day in waist deep powder. The thrill of their voice (and doubtless a bit of alcohol as well) had me vibrating within seconds of listening to the phrases “waist deep”.

After all with a quantity of snow falling prior to now a quantity of days the mountain pass between Golden and neighboring Revelstoke was treacherous to say the least. Visitors had been getting by means of intermittently between closures for avalanche control.

Stepping into Golden was a reduction for the rationale that helicopter flight to the lodge was in just under an hour. I had just enough time to stop at 7-11 for gum and other junk meals, get to the airport, sign a waiver and board the chopper.

The 22 minute flight was one thing else. We skirted up the valley from Golden with the Selkirks on the left and the Rockies on the right. A ultimate fast soar over the Kitchen Range and we were into the Chatter Creek Drainage. I may see the blue roofing of the lodge seem like a sapphire within the inexperienced and white of the encircling terrain.

The primary night time of the journey was a blur of food, booze and faces. 35 different people with the identical crazed look of powder that I had. It was exhausting to get to sleep the primary night time however earlier than lengthy I was woke up by my watch. First thing was to look out the window to see how a lot new; 22cm on top of the ninety six cm that fell in the final four days.

The morning continued with breakfast at 7:30 adopted by a safety briefing in regards to the snowcats and extra importantly avalanche safety and the use of transceivers. This was followed by boarding the cats for a 15 minute trip to the East Ridge.

Running nearly east to west for 7 km, the East Ridge is 2200 vertical feet of north dealing with trees and south facing reduce blocks.

The snowcat stopped on the top of a run called Bad Boys. The top 1/three of the run within the alpine and continued down by previous development spruce and larch. Dangerous Boys actually appeared great. Our group of 12 got out, the cat roared off to the underside to attend for us. All of us acquired equipped and adopted our guide to the place we would drop in. The information said to remain heart and stop on the tree line. With that he turned and disappeared right into a cloud of white.

I sliced my way past a couple of my buddies and dropped in. The first turn took me by surprise. It was like there was no bottom. By flip three I was capable of get a glimpse of the place I used to be and pointed to where I needed to go. With that the most epic 4 days of powder snowboarding began.

Japan’s best powder skiing resorts

FILED IN Ski Boarding No Comments

There is quite a bit of debate about this topic and sometimes people are lucky to strike the magic powder day in a resort making it seem like the perfect powder skiing resort.

In search of the perfect powder stash, the Powderhounds have ventured to a number of Japan’s top ski resorts in Hokkaido and Honshu to try and find the answer to this question. Our ideal powder skiing resort is one where you can get fresh tracks for at least a 2 – 3 days after a snow fall (without having to hike any more than 10 mins from the lifts). The quality of the snow should be light and dry and be a minimum of 150 cm (6 inches) deep (but preferable knee to waist deep).

If you are lucky enough to ski Japan, you will certainly get the depth and quality of snow with average snow falls of many Japan ski resorts receiving in excess of 10 metres (360 inches) of dry powder.

The most popular ski resort in Japan for foreigners is Niseko and for good reason. Niseko is reported to receive over 15 metres (540 inches) of snowfall annually and although it is a coastal mountain; its northern latitude ensures constant cold temperatures. Our experience of Niseko is that it seems to snow just about every day. And when it snows, it dumps huge amounts of deep, dry, bottomless powder.

The downside of Niseko is that because of this incredibly good snow falls and its fabulous terrain and vertical of over 1000 metres (3,000 feet), it is being totally inundated by Powderhounds from around the world. The chance of getting fresh tracks even after a day from the last snow fall (without having to really work the backcountry) is diminishing as the crowds increase. It is just lucky that they receive a fresh dump nearly every day.

Another resort in Hokkaido that receives good snowfalls (up to 9 metres) is Furano. The advantage of Furano is that it tends to have very low numbers of visitors compared to Niseko. It is not uncommon to have fabulous skiing in knee deep powder on the piste at Furano however one of the setbacks is that tree skiing and off-piste is frowned upon by the resort.  They are however reportedly lightening up on these rules allowing skiers into designated off-piste areas within the resort boundaries. There are a couple of backcountry tour operators that operate in Furano. These guys have access to areas not available to the public. The Powderhounds have skied some of these areas and they are nothing short of “steep and very deep”.

Tomamu, Rusutsu and Kamui Links also offer fabulous powder skiing and all have a more relaxed approach to tree skiing than Furano. Where they lack however is in the steepness of the terrain and also fall short on vertical (which isn’t really a huge deal; I would personally rather ski 300 metres of perfect powder with the perfect pitch as opposed skiing down 1,500 metres of “elephant snot”).

Another little gem is Asahidake which is located o an active volcano. This is a semi unguided backcountry experience and there are lots of powder stashed however the entire area is serviced by a single cable car. Crowds are generally not a problem; it there can be a bit of waiting around for the next cable car to arrive and leave meaning your day of skiing can be limited to half a dozen quality runs.

The Powderhounds haven’t spent enough time on Honshu to provide any comparative information apart from Hakuba in the Nagano prefect. There are actually 8 ski areas in the Hakuba Valley that can be accessed off the one lift pass however most of them are not interlinked via lifts.

Hakuba has a big vertical of 1,000 metres and has a huge snowfall averaging 11 metres. Our experience of Hakuba was that the quality of powder snow was heavier than that of the Hokkaido resorts (however this could have been an anomaly given we were only there for 1 week in January). The other negative about Hakuba is that like Furano, they have very strict policies about skiing out-of-bounds. When it does snow however, the ski area is quite large and getting fresh tracks on and around the piste is possible for several hours after a snowfall.

So where is the best powder ski resort in Japan?

For our money, if you only have limited time and want to get the most out of your powder skiing holiday you can’t go past Niseko. You can easily spend 10 – 14 days in Niseko without being bored of the terrain. If on the other hand you do have a bit of time (say 2 weeks or more), it is well worth spreading your time across several resorts to experience the variety of terrain on offer within the various ski areas. Driving around in Japan is quite straight forward as long as you have a GPS and there is also an incredibly good public transport system of buses & trains making it pretty easy and inexpensive to get around.

First Time Skiing – What Ski Apparel is Needed?

FILED IN Ski Boarding No Comments

So you are going to take to the ski slopes for the first time but the whole idea is just rather daunting. Never fear, here are a few tips to get you up and running or should we say skiing. Try to get some time in the gym before going skiing, most often people go on vacations to go skiing and you don’t want to get to the slopes, ski for half a day and then not be able to work for the rest of your stay. Get to your local gym and ask the instructors what exercising you can do to be more fit and ready to hit the slopes. Lots of squats and much inner body core muscle exercise I would imagine. Then, some people say that you should do some sort of sport that is close to snow skiing to get you used to the movement when skiing. I would think if you come from the warmer climates, you could try water wake boarding – being towed behind a boat – although that is going to prepare you for snowboarding more than skiing. Not sure what else you could try. Watch a ski instruction video, most ski apparel shops should have a video or two in stock which will give you good tips on how to ski; snowcat skiing. You are going to need ski apparel, or we could say skiing clothing and protective gear; heli ski. The tip here is not to go for the best brand, but go for a brand that is average and which has a good name – normally the older styles will have stood the test of time. The important ski apparel item is the ski jacket, this is critical in either making or breaking a ski trip. Too light and you will be cold, too thick and you will not be able to move – if it does not breath properly, you will sweat and then your sweat will get cold and so will you. Also be sure that your jacket has enough packets, like the ski pass – often jackets have special pockets for ski passes and also keys and cellular phones. The other item of ski apparel that is important are the pants, not as critical as the jacket, but it will also spoil your day if you are wet or cold; cat skiing. The other bit of ski apparel that is important are the layers/undergarments – things like long johns, like a t-shirt underneath or body suits, but the idea is that you can keep yourself warm even by just wearing the number of layers to protect you – just be careful of overdoing the number of layers as it affects your movement while skiing. On the equipment side and especially for the first time I recommend that you hire your equipment – that way you are not stuck with them if you don’t enjoy skiing, take a good couple of thick socks to use with the ski boots – and a couple of big band aid plasters to put over the blisters! To fully enjoy the skiing, make sure you are fit, warm and flexible – just that can make all the difference to your skiing holiday.
