Want to Know More About Sand Skiing? Read On

FILED IN Great Place No Comments

The new sport of sand skiing is just beginning to take off. For many of us, the experience of skiing in shorts and short sleeve shirts will be a new adventure – one that lets us enjoy skiing and stay in shape all the seasons of the year.

What is sand skiing? It is simply the brand new extreme sport. From Palm Springs, California to Dubai, from Abu Dhab to Idaho, it’s the latest extreme craze.

There are two types of sand skiing. Downhill and cross-country both of which more or less mirror their snow ski counterparts.

Downhill sand skiing involves finding a dune, hill, or mountain, climbing to the top of it and skiing down it. Is it fun? Lots – except for the part where you have to climb up the hill. You’ll find no ski lifts, no trams, not even a rope tow. If you want to get up the hill, you have to climb it on your own. Nevertheless, the lack of these niceties doesn’t seem to have prevented newcomers from being drawn to the sport.

Cross country sand skiing involves skiing finding a nice long scenic stretch of sand covered land, strapping on the ski boots and skis and having at it. Nothing strengthens the muscles and increases stamina like cross country sand skiing.

Whether you do downhill or cross country sand skiing, this is fantastic exercise. If you’re not in shape, this sport will definitely get you in shape. If you’re already in shape, sand skiing will keep you fit.

The Essentials of Sand Skiing

So what equipment does a sand skier need? Pretty much the same as a snow skier. You’ll of course need skis, preferable older ones as sand, even fine sand, is an abrasive and over time can remove material from the ski’s running surface.

Sand blindness, like snow blindness, can cause a temporary vision loss. To prevent it, you’ll need a good pair of UV resistant sunglasses or goggles. You’ll also need ski poles to push past some of the denser spots of sand.

Sand skiing is usually done in warmer environments – so dress accordingly. Wear light clothing and if the sun is intense, wear a hat to protect your head.

Finding the Perfect Sand

Snow skiers are very familiar with the different types of snow, for example skiing on powder is a much different experience than skiing on packed snow. It may surprise you that sand skiers have similar experiences. Coarse sand gives a much different experience than fine sand. Wet sand is much harder to traverse than dry sand.

As you get more into the culture of sand skiing, you’re hear the terms “fast sand” and “slow sand”. Fast sand is great, you’ll feel as though you’re gliding on glass. It’s almost effortless. Slow sand can be a grind, like slogging through quicksand. And there are all sorts of gradients in between. Skiers looking for perfect sand is much like the prototypical surfer looking for the “perfect wave”.

So skiers rejoice. No longer are you confined to the winter season. With sand skiing, you can not only enjoy your sport year round, you can enjoy it in almost any place in the world.

Last Minute Ski Vacations are Becoming More Popular

FILED IN Great Place No Comments

With the rapid climate changes that we are all experiencing, last minute ski vacations are becoming more popular than ever before. It is impossible to know in advance of time whether or not a ski resort will actually have snow when the season starts, so planning a ski vacation way ahead of time makes less sense nowadays. Nonetheless, you can still find ski vacation packages at the last minute. In fact, ski vacations are more affordable than ever before check it yourself in holidayhomes.ca , with global warming scaring many people away from risking taking a ski trip and finding it ruined by unseasonably warm temperatures.

This year, we took a Lake Tahoe ski trip. Although it took a while for the snow to fall, once it did it was beautiful and thick. So few people had planned out ski vacations, that despite the fact that we waited until the last minute, we could still find cheaper rates than we normally could months ahead of time. This isn’t the case with all ski vacations, but it was where we were going. You see, it depends on the altitude of the ski lodge. The higher altitude ski lodges still have plenty of snow, but the low-lying ones have a shorter and shorter season every year. If you are ready to take ski vacations at the last minute, many of these low altitude ski cabins will have great deals for you.

Of course, it you go and it doesn’t snow the whole time, you can still enjoy your ski vacation. I have always thought that getaways are mostly about, well, getting away. Skiing is great on ski vacations, but it is only half the fun. The other half is just sitting there, drinking hot chocolate and sopping in a warm hot tub. Even if the snow is not falling outside – and it won’t always be – you can still enjoy that.

As the planet continues to warm, I think that the outlook of ski vacations will change. Outdoor ski lodges will still do some business when it snows, but I think the future is indoors. Already, indoor ski vacations have taken off in places like Japan and Dubai. People pay a fortune to go to an indoor ski resort in the middle of the city and relax for a couple of hours. Although they do not have the majesty of traditional ski vacations – going up to the top of a mountain from which you can see the whole panorama of the state – they have a modern convenience that is unsurpassed anywhere.

Vacations Can Be Made More Exciting With Jet Ski Rentals

FILED IN Great Place No Comments

Whether you’re going to the beach on vacation or you’ve rented a cottage on the lake, a jet ski or better yet a pair of them, can add some serious fun and excitement to the trip. Jet skis can be purchased or rented in a number of locations and are fairly simple for almost anyone to learn how to use. They do, however, require some basic understanding of the rules of the water.

Jet skis are considered personal watercraft. Not exactly like water skis and not exactly a boat, these allow their users to speed on the water while enjoying some great scenery and fun. Safety, however, should be paramount when using a jet ski.

Here is some advice to consider before diving in (or on) to the water with a jet ski:
* Bear in mind at all times that jet skis are fun, but they are not toys. Accidents can happen and do happen and most are avoidable.
* All in all, jet skis are pretty safe. As long as they’re kept in good working order, which most rental shops absolutely ensure, they shouldn’t be a problem on the water.
* Get some training before using a jet ski. Make sure you understand how it works, what you need to do to ride it safely and be aware of any local regulations. There are personal watercraft safety courses people can take to ensure they know what they’re doing before they hit the water.
* Before heading out in a jet ski, check weather reports. It’s never a good idea to be stuck in a storm in a boat or jet ski.
* Know the terrain. Be certain you understand how to read water hazard markers and are aware of any obstructions, such as reefs and sandbars, that might cause accidents.
* Wear a life jacket. This one bears repeating again and again.
* If exploring on a jet ski is in order, make sure someone on land knows your desired route, where you’re going and when you expect to be back.
* Wear protective clothing. It’s not always necessary, but goggles, a wet suit and protective footwear can make the experience that much better – and safer.
* Follow local laws in the water. Yes, there are speed limits in the water. Heed them! In places like Florida, for example, manatee and alligators can get in the way of fun, generally to their own detriment. Speed limits are enforced in areas where high-speed action can present a danger to an operator, an animal or both.

Adding a little jet ski action through a rental is a great way to kick up the fun factor of a vacation. But, if knowledge and caution aren’t in place, sometimes problems can occur. Be smart and know how to operate a craft safely before diving in. Do not forget a lifejacket and don’t be afraid to take a class to learn more.

Jet skis are favored by many who like the freedom they offer in the water. Giving a different feel than water skis or boats, perhaps a mix is the best description, these personal craft can be a real blast, too. When common sense is taken along on the ride, nothing can pump up the water fun quite like a jet ski.

Andorra Skiing More Affordable with Low Cost Airlines

FILED IN Ski Boarding No Comments

Many Europeans enjoy going on holiday in the winter, and ski slopes are one of the major destinations for individuals on holiday during the cold months.

Usually the only thing stopping an individual or family from going on holiday is the price tag, as some individuals and families don’t have the financial resources to fund a holiday trip to go skiing. However several low cost airlines are making a holiday to the ski slopes affordable for many more individuals and families.

Several airlines recently announced a plan to encourage more trips to ski resorts by opening up additional routes for travel. These fly passengers directly to the airports that are closest to several of the major skiing destinations for many individuals and families on holiday. For example, easyJet flies passengers on holiday into Barcelona, which is the nearest airport to the Andorra skiing resorts.

In addition to the flight taking passengers to ski at Andorra, there are several more flights connecting skiiers to their favorite ski destinations. Flights from London, Glasgow, Bristol, Liverpool, Blackpool and Newscastle all connect individuals to their favorite skiing destinations. In fact, Ryanair announced in October of 2007 that they would increase the number of ski routes to 58, which is the largest number of direct routes from the UK to European ski destinations for one company.

Of course several other airline companies have followed suit and are also offering individuals and families on holiday to ski resorts with low costs and direct flights. These include Snowjet, Flybe, Thomsonfly and of course easyJet.

The reason airlines have chosen to increase the number of direct routes they provide to ski resorts for the 2007 winter holiday period is due to the fact business is booming. As of the end of October, easyJet alone reported over 2.5 million bookings for individuals and families wanting their flying services to travel to skiing destinations in Europe during the winter.

Increasing the number of direct routes of these low costs airlines allows even more people to book flights for their holiday plans.

Due to the fact that more direct routes have been developed, individuals can expect to pay less for their flight than in previous years. More routes have made it possible for individuals to connect to their favourite skiing place straight from their local airport.

This means individuals don’t have to fly out of their way and experience a stopover before they even board the actual plane that will take them where they want to go. This will be a major benefit to many individuals as it will save time flying and instead allow them with more time to spend on the slopes actually skiing.

If you are planning to go skiing for your next holiday, consider using one of the low cost airlines offering direct ski routes. Not only do they offer you direct routes that fly you into the airport nearest the ski resort you are staying at, but they also make taking a holiday affordable for more skiiers.
