Selecting the Right Character of Ski Boots
Written by ski on July 29, 2008 – 10:14 pm -
Skiing is a trying activity. When it amounts to snow skiing, the challenge is magnified. If walking along steep trails is a challenge for most people, then skiing through the icy surface and in slippery conditions is the supreme challenge. Not entirely will your poise be evidenced, you will also be putting your quality to the mental test as well. As such, when skiing is the alternative of outdoor activity for one, it is essential that one is wearing the befitting ski boots.
Comfort in Ski Boots
Ski boots are no average footwear. They must be projected carefully so as to cater a well-off blend with one’s ski. Furthermore, when the skier is using ski bindings, the boots are the one that provide the attachment of the biding to the skier. Originally, boots utilized for skiing were formed from leather. This is due to the famous prop of leather to admit a stonewall barrier from extreme colds as well as from the elements. Furthermore, the strength of leather as a stuff forestalls one from becoming bruised when struck by loose debris and chunks of ice that are circumstantially set off during skiing.
The earliest patterns were affected to feel indistinguishable any other pair of shoes. Their cut was besides the identical as an average shoe except that they are a bit higher and padded on the interior to work as a cushion. Nevertheless, when skiing rendered a wider following, this made the project of ski boots to be varied from the customary blueprint. What applied to be made of leather, today’s boots are at present ordinarily produced of plastic with soft foam lining and padding. The hard plastic shell is finer than leather because it is wholly bearable to moisture and its tough construction gets it errorless for skiing because it can deal with super cold conditions, which may cause leather to miss its strength. The padding and lining render Comfort and warmth, which are two factors sorely took during skiing runs.
Because of the various sorts of skiing, there are similarly different ski boots that one can utilize grounded on the environment that one will face-off. Still, the divergence is entirely by a matter of degrees as plastic all the same reigns as the most favored stuff because of its lasting.
Types of Ski Boots
One of the variants in boots is the style by which they are worn. The accompanying are the most informal Type of boots utilized for skiing:
# Front entry ski boots. These boots are the most fashionable because of the manner that it heightens execution. The high and tough cuff admit the skier to cause control and force easily transmitted to the binding.
# Rear-entry ski boots. This is the boots of alternative for novices as well as for those who detest the restrictive way of wearing the front entry form. By merely unbuckling a hinged cuff at the back of the boot, one can easily wear and take off this boot. Because of its easiness, it is as well the cheapest kind procurable, although they do not afford the indistinguishable level of command as front entry boots.

Skiing in Banff: a Guide for British Tourists
Written by ski on July 29, 2008 – 9:56 am -
Mount Norquay, Sunshine Village and Lake Louise make up the three ski areas of Banff. All three resorts are unique in their own way with Mount Norquay being the closest to town, a quick 15 minute drive from downtown.
Mount Norquay is particularly popular with ski racers and locals who like steep fall line skiing; this is what the resort is really all about. Although the ski area is relatively quiet with a spacious and charming lodge, the skiing is not really suited to beginner and novice skiers. Unless you are a competent parallel skier, the trails at Norquay will seem daunting. My advice as a former ski instructor in the area would be to recommend this resort to “seasoned’ skiers” who like the challenge of steeps, bumps and hard pack conditions.
Sunshine Village is the next resort closest to town and can be found by driving West on Highway 1 towards Lake Louise. The drive takes approximately 30 minutes but can take longer on stormy days. Once you arrive at the car park you must ride the gondola to reach the ski area. This takes about twenty two minutes normally. Sometimes on very cold days (Often in December and January) the gondola will not run first thing probably for safety reasons. There are also occasions when windy conditions affect the time duration of the gondola ride.
he skiing conditions at Sunshine Village are generally excellent from early December (and often earlier) until late May. This is primarily due to its location and relatively high altitude which is comparable to high elevation European resorts.
Most British tourists who visit Sunshine Village fall in love with the scenery, light snow and skiing. The resort is of average size (compared to European and US resorts) and the trails are suitable for all levels except experts. If you are a “die hard” skier who has skied some of the serious resorts of the world you may find Sunshine unimpressive. This is because the trails are relatively short and not particularly steep. Delirium Dive is the one exception but this area is often closed for much of the season for safety reasons.
If you are a beginner skier you may find the learning area small and often crowded on weekends and holidays. However once you graduate away from this area you will find many enjoyable “green trails” to keep you happy.
For Intermediate skiers who make parallel turns or semi parallel turns Sunshine Village is a perfect place to ski. The vast majority of trails here are ideally suited for this level of skier who will love the wide open slopes and great conditions.
Sunshine Village is a truly beautiful resort to see and ski at. Most people who come here have a positive skiing experience and except for the cold weather (December and January particularly) it is hard to fault Sunshine.
The last area that makes up the ski areas of Banff is Lake Louise. Lake Louise is particularly good for intermediate to advanced skiers. Although the ski area is relatively big most of the trails are not particularly suited for beginner and novice skiers. The initial learning area however is very good (with the exception of the T-bar lift which most beginners and novices dislike). However once this area is mastered (usually between one and three days) the next step is relatively large.
Although there are many “green trails” on the front side and backside of the mountain, most of them are not particularly easy. What compounds this problem is that the front side is often hard packed and scraped due to the artificial snow that is made here. The backside does not suffer with this problem however the only trail down the mountain is a narrow path which is often intimidating for novice skiers.
For most intermediate skier’s Lake Louise is normally a wonderful experience with an abundance of long trails. In my opinion the better skiing is to be found on the backside particularly the Larch Area. Advanced skiers will also love the backside particularly on a “powder day”.
To sum up my analysis of the three areas and where one should ski when visiting Banff this is my recommendation.
Mount Norquay
Mount Norquay is ideally suited to competent parallel skiers and not beginner or novices.
Lake Louise
If you are a first time skier Lake Louise has the best learning area of all three mountains. Except for the T-bar lift, most beginner and early novice skiers make good progress here. Lake Louise is not so good for the same skiers after two days of learning as the next step up the mountain is quite challenging for most. Many of the Lake Louise “green trails” are steep, narrow or hard pack. The front side of the mountain (especially lower down nearer the bottom) is often icy and hard packed due to man made snow. The backside of the mountain is usually much better for most levels of skier.
Sunshine Village
Sunshine Village is ideal for most skiers except experts. The resort has a small beginner area that gets busy on weekends and holidays. The scenery and snow at Sunshine Village are breathtaking and except for the early season (December and January when it can be very cold) Sunshine skiing is hard to fault.
If you are a competent parallel skier I would suggest you try all three resorts and decide for yourself which is your favourite. Happy skiing this winter.

Vail Ski Trips = NightLife, Restaurants, and of Course…Skiing!
Written by ski on July 28, 2008 – 6:13 pm -
What’s the difference between Vail ski vacations and ski trips? Generally, nothing: in both cases, you’ll ski until you can’t ski anymore and then you’ll spend the evening dining in one of Vail’s world class restaurants and then you’ll dance the night away at one of their great nightclubs, filled with fellow skiers like you.
But for many people these fantastic ski trips are slightly different than a ski vacation. Vacations are usually something that you might do to get away from it all with your family or a spouse. A trip, on the other hand, is something you might do with a bunch of people – likely avid skiers – who are looking to make the most of a week or two away.
On a vacation, I kick back and relax: my time is my own and I do as I please. Do I feel like skiing today? Great. I’ll ski. Do I feel like shopping today? Great. I’ll shop.
But for the avid skiers on these trips, it’s all about the skiing. For them, nearly every moment of the day that is not spend swooshing down the slopes is a moment wasted! And Vail offers the perfect spot for a trip like this: there are slopes on the Front Side of the mountain for beginner skiers (as well as ski school, if necessary). There are many slopes on the popular Blue Sky Basin for intermediate skiers…which is most people. And there are many challenging slopes on the Back Bowls for the advanced skier who wants a thrilling ski experience.
Once you’ve mastered these hills, why not take a day trip out to Snowmass Colorado or Aspen Colorado and ski Snowmass Mountain? Try the famous Snowmass chili and watch a Snowmass sun set. The change of scenery will be welcome and you’ll return to Vail with a renewed interest in skiing Vail Mountain.
When booking your Vail ski trips, you’ll need a place to stay. Many of these trips are made fun by going with a whole bunch of people, so find as many friends as you can. You may even get a discount on the airfare or in your lodging and if you find a lot of people, everyone can chip in and you’ll find a great place to stay…like at a rental house with a pool, barbecue, and deck!
To make your vacation even better, don’t worry about bringing any equipment. You’ll be able to rent equipment when you’re there and that way, if you decide to take off for a while to a different town, you won’t have to lug it around with you.
Not sure about how you’ll get around on your vacation? Vail has the best shuttle service in the US and it’s absolutely free…all part of the service to get you to the mountains so you can ski.
Want to go on an amazing ski trip? You should go…find 10 or 20 of your closest friends and make it a trip you’ll never forget.

Are You Ready for Ski Season in Breckenridge?
Written by ski on July 23, 2008 – 8:27 pm -
Getting ready for the ski season will get you excited since youâve been waiting all year for it. As the wind gets chilly and the leaves begin to fall, we anticipate the first signs of snow. Still, proper preparation for your most awaited season of the year is in order. Get your body in good shape while keeping it safe from injury as well. All physical sports require a lot of different muscle movements. Regardless of how active you have been all summer and all throughout fall, chances are some parts of your body maybe out of sync. Skiing in particular requires a lot of leg muscle action. So before ski season starts, build in your endurance and condition your muscles.
Itâs great if youâve stayed active throughout the summer and fall months, good for you. But chances are you still need to give attention to certain muscles that havenât been getting much attention. Youâll need to devote a few weeks to a month of good conditioning exercises for ski season. Keeping active will likely make you be in better shape but that wouldnât be enough, good news is you wonât have to work as hard if youâve let yourself slack off throughout summer and fall. So as to avoid or better yet, prevent having muscle pain or injury get started on your workout right away. Donât overdo it though; big changes in physical activity can also result in overall body aches.
Your legs is the primary part of your body that gets the most amount of activity when you ski, and your legs should get the most amount of workout while youâre preparing for the upcoming ski season. The best way to do this is to stimulate actual skiing. Workouts on a cross-country ski machine or a slide board are excellent choices. Still, skiing requires intense bursts of energy followed with rests in between, so short intense cardio workouts to get your heart rate going and pump up your lungs are recommended.
Building up your ski legs is a good plan; squat and lunges are not just good ski conditioning exercises for your legs but can also do wonders to your backside. Incorporate free weights into your routine. Work on your cardio and aerobic activity by spending some time on the treadmill and stairmasters, a much better way is running a hilly route. Be sure to give special attention to muscles you will be using when skiing but an overall well toned body is the best way of preparing for the ski season.
Breckenridge skiing requires great flexibility and balance, sudden movements, twisting turns and sudden dropping from heights, will leave you breathless in a couple of seconds. Working on your flexibility by doing yoga can do a ton of difference. Yoga also tones your muscle and makes you look leaner and longer, you will look good in your ski outfit too.
If youâre like me who spends summer and fall enjoying the outdoor barbecues too much, you should slowly shift your diet towards having leaner proteins and plenty of vegetables. A healthy diet is essential to conditioning your body. The whole point of exercising and sports training is to be healthy, so why not complete the whole regimen by watching your diet too.
Always remember the day of your first skiing day of the year, the feeling of happiness and excitement while stepping into your skis and into the snow again, itâs always a wonderful feeling. So make you sure you condition your body to enjoy a whole uninterrupted day with a perfect first ski day of the season.
