Snow Board Preparation Tips
Written by ski on February 29, 2008 – 11:31 am -
Everyone that loves snow boarding knows that accidents can easily happen, and accidents do happen on a daily basis. That is why you have to follow basic tips to prepare before you actually hit the slopes, and if you do not follow the basic rules then you are simply asking for accidents to happen. That is why I recommend that anyone who is planning a snow board tip should do the following before they even consider leaving the house:
1. Ensure that you clean your board and your boots. When you allow your boots and board to get dirty, then they not click into place as well, and you also risk slipping etc. More than anything else you should never deliberately go to the slope with boots and a board that are dirty.
2. You should always ensure that a member of your family or friends knows where you are, and when you are expected to be back. If you are out on a long run, and something wrong happens, then you are left to rely on someone to find you if the worst happens and you get lost with an injury.
3. Always wear waterproof clothes. If you do not wear waterproof clothing then you are surely asking for problems. This means water proof trousers, water proof jacket, and water proof gloves are a must.
4. Make sure that you do not eat something that is too filling or you may end up with cramps and the kind of thing that you have to try and avoid. The best food that you can eat before you hit the slopes is high calorie, low fat foods, such as pasta for example.
5. Do not consider trying runs that are well in advance of your ability levels, the trick is to take things slowly and try and build up gradually, time by time, every time you visit. Jumping ahead of yourself can actually mean that you place too much pressure on yourself and you end up not wanting to come back.
6. Consider your friends and prepare how you are going to act based on those that you are going snow boarding with. If the snow boarder is an amateur, then you have to think how you would feel if you were to go snow boarding with someone and they were to always try more challenging runs. You would surely try and compete and that can cause accidents and embarrassment.
7. Bring a change of clothing and a snack for when you are out. It is good to come prepared and you do not want your day to end early because your clothes are uncomfortable or because you are hungry or thirsty. Remember that when you are out on the slopes that if you fail to drink enough then problems can happen. You may feel cold, so you do not feel thirsty, but that is why you have to try and ensure that have enough to drink.
Making sure that you are prepared for going on a snow boarding trip is one of the best ways to ensure that you have a great day, and so does everyone around you. Taking that extra time, to ensure that everything is going to go smoothly will surely pay off when you are on the slopes.

Enjoy the thrill of water skiing: Play it safely
Written by ski on February 27, 2008 – 3:11 pm -
Water skiing is very thrilling and one of the most popular adventure sports around the world. You can have a thrilling experience and loads of excitement and fun if you are interested in water skiing. But not before you are aware of all technical rules involving water skiing safety. Because a slight negligence and reluctance on your part can result in a massacre. Water skiing is at one point a boat game but the skier splashes through the water and the chill of thrill lies in the havoc speed. Thus you call it water skiing. It’s a team of three where one is the operator and the other is the observer and the main guy is the skier in the whole game.
You can easily make out one thing. As the game of water skiing has two risky zones, one is water and the other is speed, it has to be played with immense precautions. To avoid unwanted accidents the water skiing has some inherent rules and safety measures which every player has to follow. When it is a one man show the risk can be minimized but when a set of skiers plunge into the same portion of the river, it is very difficult to keep track on every individual. The risk probability is doubled.
Safety rules in water skiing
-The compulsory age: You cannot start water skiing whenever you wish. The minimum age when you can become both an operator and an observer has been fixed to be sixteen. With special permission from the concerned ski board, one below sixteen but more than twelve can become an observer but for being operator the age mentioned is mandatory.
-Skiing tools and uniform: The personal floatation device or PFD has to be strictly personal. You cannot use someone else’s device. Put on something that makes you feel light and doesn’t disturb when you ski across the water. The colors of the jersey must be bright to be identified easily.
-Hour of skiing: Again you can’t wish to ski as per your mood. There are specifications of time and you are bound to follow the rules. It is always between sunrise and sunset that means in bright daylight. It cannot be an hour before or after that.
-Fitness and not addicted: The trio has to be body fit and the level of alcohol in the blood has to be less 0.05. If it is traced more they will be disqualified and even penalized.
-Signaling techniques: When you are already in water on with the game, you can meet with accident anytime without even the slightest idea. The observer’s duty is to constantly keep his eyes on the skier and following the path he should indicate the operator of the boat. Even then if the skier falls, the skier should try to raise the arm or the ski straight towards upward direction, so that the observer can instantly find out what has happened. The life of the skier can thus be saved.

Where are the Best Place to Ski in Australia?
Written by ski on February 27, 2008 – 6:53 am -
When most people hear the word Australia they will often think of the Outback or the large cities such as Melbourne. However, Australia is known for something so much more that makes it truly unique, great skiing. As there are numerous resorts and runs that the beginner to the most advanced skier will find challenging. As a result, there are numerous places to ski that can provide you with that sense of rigid beauty that Australia is known for with the traditional winter feel.
Charlotte Pass
Located in the Snowy Mountains this ski area the resort is in the town of Charlotte Pass Village. The area is completely snowed in during the winter which means that over snow transport is necessary to go in and out of Charlotte’s Pass. However, once at the resort it is clear that the entire town has become virtual ski area as you can literally ski from your front door to the lifts. This provides visitors from all walks of life that winter experience which is difficult to find in many areas of the world as large interests have commercialized the sport. At Charlotte Pass, you can see what it felt like to skiing 50 years ago when many areas were known to be inaccessible during the winter.
Dinner Plain
This ski area is located a little over 5.5 hours from Melbourne. However, the skiing is well worth the trip with the resort catering to mainly beginners as evidence by all of the runs at such skill levels. The resort is nestled in the high Victorian Alps and can provide everyone with that overall unique feel of classic Australian architecture with the wondrous beauty of Victoria.
Clearly, Australia has outstanding skiing for skiers of all skill levels. During the winter the various snow reports indicate snow fall amounts similar to what is experienced at the popular areas in the Northern hemisphere. This along with the one of a kind feel is what makes Australian skiing the well kept secret that only continues to build a vast grass roots following.

âThe Mountain offers the Snowsports Learning Center, the ski school which introduced the revolutionary âcarved turnââ, adds Gwatkin. There is also the Tamarack Grill restaurant and bar, a retail shop, and a cafe. The Grill is known locally for superb food and offers an extensive wine list and a variety of Vermont brews, including its very own Tamarack and Bear Den Ales. The Mid-Burke Lodge, featuring the Bear Den Lounge, captures the essence of the character of Burke Mountain, with its field stone fireplace, exposed wooden beams, solid pine tables and skis from days gone by displayed on its walls.
Also, Burke Mountain âoffers a variety of season-long programs for children and aspiring ski racers,â says Gwatkin. âThe Snowsports Learning Center features its Burkie Explorers and Freestyle programs for children from ages four to 12. These programs are available to both skiers and snowboarders. Burke Mountain also partners with Burke Mountain Academy to offer its Junior Race Program, available to racers in the J3 to J7 classes. Young racers train and race throughout the season under the tutelage of BMAâs world-class coaches, some of whom are former Olympic and US National Team members.â
Beyond the resort, families can partake in ice-fishing on one of the regionâs magnificent lakes, ice skating on a secluded pond, sledding, snowmobiling, snow shoeing, dog-sledding or take a ride in a horse-drawn sleigh.
And there is summer time too on the mountain. Gwatkin mentioned that the âarea offers a bevy of activities for the outdoor enthusiast. Over a third of the stateâs ponds and lakes are in Northeast Kingdom, Vermontâs expansive, least populated region, offering wonderful paddling and angling experiences. The village of East Burke is home to the Kingdom Trails, an internationally acclaimed network of over 150 miles of mountain biking trails stitched across the areaâs pastoral landscape. For those interested in viewing wildlife either by boat or on foot, seeing loon, moose, deer, wild turkeys, ruffed grouse, peregrine falcons, and the cagey red fox is hardly uncommon.â
Burke Mountainâs parent company, the Ginn Company, based in Celebration, FL, is currently in the planning stages for a development that will include condominiums, single-family homes and a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course. Give a close look at http://www.skiburke.com
Ski Butternut, in Great Barrington, Massachusetts is described by SKI Magazine as âa true family mountainâ and âfamily gemâ, that offers skiers and snowboarders from across the northeastern United States an affordable, fun-filled winter sports experience. With 1,000 feet of vertical, Ski Butternutâs 110-skiable-acres of slopes and trails provide snow-sport enthusiasts of all abilities a unique and memorable winter experience. âAnd thanks to a newly upgraded snowmaking system,â says Matt Sawyer, Marketing Director, âthe mountain can now pump out 200 percent more snow this winter than in previous years, as long as Mother Nature cooperates!â
The mountain, located in the beautiful Berkshire mountains of southwestern Massachusetts, is a relatively short drive, less than four hours from Philadelphia or New York City, with directions provided on Ski Butternutâs informative website http://www.SkiButternut.com.
âSki Butternut affords skiers and snowboarders of all abilities a diverse sampling of terrain,â says Sawyer. âOur trails include an easy yet fun-filled beginner trail which winds from top to bottom through virgin forests of Pine, Hemlock, Beech and Maple.â
Unlike other mountains located much farther north, all trails safely funnel back to the base area, so families can reconnect and share the winter fun more easily! At the mountainâs base are two modern base lodges and a separate but easily accessible learn-to-ski area featuring gentle first-timer and beginner slopes with their own easy-to-learn-and-use chairlifts, and a gentle Wonder Carpet ride for the very youngest skier or snowboarder!
âElsewhere on our mountain,â adds Sawyer, âsliders will find a variety of wider, intermediate trails, perfect for relaxed cruising and linking long, carved turns. Other skiers and snowboarders wanting a bit more of a wild ride, will enjoy Ski Butternutâs two terrain parks. The more advanced park offers a selection of challenging âhitsâ and jumps, scattered across and down our âTwistâ and âWestwayâ expert trails. For those just learning terrain park features, a smaller version is located in Ski Butternutâs beginner area. â
In keeping skiing and snowboarding costs affordable, Butternut offers savings and great value. For instance, season passes, if purchased by November 30th, are only $229 for adults, ages 14 to 65; $179 for juniors, ages seven to 13; and just $69 for kids, six-years and under. After that, season prices revert to their regular rates ($279 for adults, $209 for juniors and just $79 for kids).
âIf you are not ready to commit to season passes,â says Sawyer, âconsider purchasing Ski Butternutâs Lift-Ticket-3-Packs. These blocks of three daily lift vouchers can be used interchangeably, individually or togetherâ¦and if purchased by December 20, will save you $10 per ticket! And skiers and snowboarders who donât yet have their own gear, can rent complete sets of equipment for the season for just $99 for kids and juniors, and only $139 for anyone over the age of 14!â
You can also save by skiing Monday through Thursday, when lift tickets are just $20 ($20 tickets are not valid during holiday periods). Also there are First-Timer and All-Mountain packages, which include lift, lesson and rentals. Economical ski and stay packages are also available at more than 30 country inns, bed and breakfasts and motels near the mountain, starting at just $45 per person per day! âThis price includes both your lodging and your daily lift ticket,â adds Sawyer.
The Mountain has more than 200 qualified ski, snowboard and adaptive instructors under the guidance of Einar Aas, director for the past 44 years.
Many youngsters learn, practice and improve their skills best through Ski Butternutâs SKIwee and miniRIDER learning programs. These special programs, which provide young skiers and snowboarders a lift ticket, lesson and snacks for the day, can be extended for five days to maximize savings.
So wherever you are in the northeast, there is plenty of quality, family snow sport fun without needing a hefty bank account to do it. Beautiful, exciting and rewarding the winter mountain experience awaits you.
